Dr. Alina Wikström
Dr. Alina Wikström is a specialist in endodontics and her field of special interest is providing treatment to young individuals with combined endodontic and sedation needs. She graduated from the Medical University of Warsaw in 2000 and moved to Sweden. After completing her post-graduate residency at Karolinska Institute, she received her specialization in endodontics in 2016 at the Public Dental Health Services, Eastman Institute Stockholm. Since then, she has been employed at the Department of Endodontics at Eastman Institute in Stockholm as a senior consultant. Dr. Wikström completed her PhD-studies at Karolinska Institute in 2025. Her PhD project evaluated the treatment options available for children and adolescents with traumatized immature necrotic teeth. Among those are clinical, radiographical and microbiological outcomes of regenerative endodontic treatment and the long-term outcomes of apexification techniques. Currently, Dr. Wikström combines clinical practice at Eastman Institute with post-doctoral research at Karolinska Institute within an intyernational research group specializing in the field of dental traumatology.

Regenerative endodontic treatment – how do we achieve predictable outcomes?
Abstract:
The subject of this lecture is to provide an evidence-based evaluation of regenerative endodontic treatment for the management of pulpal and periapical disease in permanent teeth with pulp necrosis with or without periapical disease.
Considerable uncertainty exists as to whether regenerative endodontic treatment may be considered a suitable alternative or even a replacement for conventional endodontic apexification treatment in immature teeth. Moreover, the lecture provides a discussion if mature teeth are suitable to treat with regenerative endodontics.
Different aspects regarding the procedure are going to be discussed. These are the clinical challenges, the outcome measures, the definition of success and failure, decision-making and the current scientific evidence for the effectiveness of regenerative endodontic treatment compared to other treatment options.
