Prof. Nastaran Meschi
Nastaran became cum laude dentist (University of Brussels, Belgium) in 2006. In 2012, she graduated magna cum laude as Master of Science in Endodontology (KU Leuven, Belgium). From 2014-2022, while exercising exclusively endodontology in private practices in Brussels and Leuven, she was also a part-time researcher at BIOMAT KU Leuven and an instructor (clinical and research) in endodontology at the Department of Oral Health Sciences (KU Leuven). In March 2021, she obtained the degree of Doctor in Biomedical Sciences at KU Leuven. So far, Nastaran published several scientific articles and book chapters and presented her research in several international meetings. Since 2023, she is a visiting professor in endodontology at Ghent University (Ghent, Belgium) and in 2025 she joined the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Brussels, Belgium) as a lecturer in endodontology. She serves the European Society of Endodontology as a member of the Research Committee and Benefits of Endodontics Committee.

Decoronation and Root Submergence: on the Quest for Bone Preservation
Abstract:
Nearly one in five children worldwide have a history of dental trauma before the age of twelve. Generally, the immature permanent upper front teeth get injured, often resulting in pulpal inflammation or necrosis and arrested root development. Not only the dental pulp is at peril post trauma, but also the periodontal ligament (PDL) could be damaged by severe luxative injuries, resulting in an inflammatory process on the external root surface. By losing the protection of the PDL, the tooth is prone to ankylosis and replacement resorption. In adults, such teeth might be monitored or replaced. Nevertheless, in growing individuals un-aesthetic ridge deformity and tilting of adjacent teeth due to infraposition might be the sequelae of trauma. Hence, leaving such cases untreated in children and growing individuals is not an option. An arsenal of treatment options is available nowadays: composite build-up, surgical repositioning, bone distraction, autotransplantation, extraction and orthodontically closing the gap, and decoronation and root submergence. The latter are a combined treatment modality aiming to preserve the alveolar bone by means of root preservation, firstly described by Malmgren et al.in 1984.
The current presentation will discuss the following regarding decoronation and root submergence, based on the available scientific evidence and clinical cases: procedure, etiology, indication and outcome.
