Prof. Paweł Plakwicz
Prof. Plakwicz graduated from the Dental Faculty, Medical University of Warsaw. He was an assistant lecturer at the Department of Oral Surgery at the same university. He completed postgraduate training in autotransplantation of teeth at the University of Oslo, Norway in 2000. In 1996, he established a private practice in Warsaw, focused on the oral and periodontal surgery. In 2001, he qualified as a specialist in Oral Surgery and in 2009 defended his PhD. In 2015 he gained his PhD with habilitation. In 2017 he received his MFDS ad eundem from the Royal College of Surgeons of England. In 2023 he became a full professor. Until 2024 he has worked at the Department of Periodontology, Medical University of Warsaw. His main research interests are in the treatment of growing patients with missing teeth, eruption disturbances, teeth autotransplantation and treatment of mucogingival deformities. During the last decade, he authored and co-authored over 70 scientific articles and chapters in the books. He has performed and followed-up more than 700 autotransplanted teeth. Prof. Plakwicz lectures and conducts courses nationally and internationally in Europe, Africa and in the United States (where he was appointed Adjunct Professor at the UNC in Chapel Hill, NC in 2019).

Autotransplantation of teeth to the anterior maxilla: surgical technique and healing of the transplanted teeth.
Abstract:
The periodontal response to dental trauma depends on the nature of damage and varies from spontaneous healing to severe or late complications. Some types of root resorption can be successfully treated while other types are progressive and may eventually lead to tooth loss. In young patients the presence of teeth is essential for development and growth of the alveolar process. Tooth loss always leads to alveolar bone loss and later any type of treatment becomes a challenge, with often limited success.
However, hopeless anterior teeth may often be replaced by developing teeth autotransplanted from other regions of the oral cavity. Premolars with developing roots are optimal donors with reported success over 90 per cent. Autotransplantation of developing premolars to maxillary anterior region will be presented during the lecture.
The lecture will provide information about the surgical technique for autotransplantation of developing teeth to replace hopeless or lost maxillary incisors. Alveolar bone preservation and regeneration is an important and extremely promising aspect of this treatment modality. It will be demonstrated, using clinical examples, that developing premolars may in many cases serve as a natural providers of bone growth and may help in regeneration of the alveolus in anterior maxilla. This advantage seems to be the most strategic factor in favour of performing tooth autotransplantation in child to avoid the need for compromised implant in the future.
